Media Experts Mark Anniversary to End Impunity Against Journalists in Zimbabwe (News Central TV)

Media experts and journalists are converging in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe for the tenth anniversary of the International Day to End Impunity Against. This year’s commemorations are marked by unpacking the UN Action Plan recommendations on the Safety of Journalists and issues of Impunity. The two-day event will begin on November 11 – 12 and will see over ten African countries present. The commemorations will also see the launch of the State of Press Freedom in Africa Report.

Presenting recommendations of UN Plan of Action to the African Media Conference, Lydia Gachungi, Regional Adviser on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists at UNESCO’s Liaison Office to the African Union & UNECA in Addis Ababa insists that attacks on journalists are attacks on freedom of expression, and that “…defending journalism is standing up for democracy.”

The Media Institute of South Africa (MISA) is leading the memorial supported by UNESCO with CIPESA, UNRCO, ACHPR among others. One of the many issues under the spotlight for discussion is online gender-based violence.
