Mendy Soars, Mahrez Sinks as Chelsea Win UCL

Edouard Mendy has won the Champions League for the first time in his career as Riyad Mahrez missed out on a glorious European night.

Kai Havertz’s first half strike was all Chelsea needed to emerge winners of Europe’s biggest competition for the first time since 2012 and for the second time in their career.

Mendy was full of emotions as Chelsea lifted the cup, as he now joins a very thin list of Senegalese winners of the Champions League after Sadio Mane won Europe’s most prestigious club competition in 2019.

Man City looked short of greatness on what’s arguably the biggest night of their modern existence as a football club. Chelsea, looking unmoved from the blast of the whistle missed two gilt-edged chances courtesy of some profligate finishing from Timo Werner.

The Blues soon changed the complexion of the game with a good goal from Havertz after a beautiful Mason Mount pass. City never looked like they could recover from the deficit as they played without penetration, huffed and puffed and missed begging chances.
