Meta Exploring New Application to Compete With Twitter

The parent business of Facebook, Meta, is developing a stand alone text-based social network application that will compete with Twitter and Mastodon at the same time.

The information was first reported by Moneycontrol and it was verified by Meta, though the business provided few specifics regarding its current projects.

Users will be able to register for and enter into the application using their Instagram credentials because the app will be Instagram-branded. It’s unclear whether the ‘P92’ app is still in the concept stage or if production has already started.

“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests” a Meta representative stated.

Instagram, which is controlled by Meta, also debuted a brand-new feature in December 2022 called Notes, which enables users to share brief posts of up to 60 characters using only text and emojis. According to a report in The New York Times, the business has thought about making this function a rival to Twitter.

According to the plan, the app’s early versions would allow users to share additional features like clickable links in posts with previews (similar to Twitter), user bios, usernames, verification badges, images, and videos. It would also permit followers and likes, though it is unknown if the initial edition of the product would include commenting and messaging capabilities.
