Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence on Tuesday that a favourable agreement could be reached with US President Donald Trump this week to prevent tariffs on Mexican imports.
Speaking at her morning news conference, Sheinbaum stated, “We hope to be able to reach an agreement before the end of the week, at the latest on Monday,”
Her comments followed Trump’s announcement that his planned tariffs of up to 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada were set to proceed as scheduled.

Mexican officials are currently in Washington for negotiations, and Sheinbaum indicated she would speak with Trump again by phone if necessary.
Trump had initially cited illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking as reasons for the tariffs but delayed them for a month after Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 additional troops to Mexico’s northern border. The pause is set to expire next Tuesday.
“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule,” Trump reaffirmed during a press conference on Monday.
