Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that an investigation has been launched after unknown hackers compromised her cell phone and an old email account.
She told reporters at her daily briefing, “They hacked my phone and my email account,” but “we don’t know” who was behind it.
The New York Times reports that the event occurred after Mexico turned over 29 suspected drug lords to the United States last month, though she did not specify the exact time.

Sheinbaum maintained that every official phone number and email account is secure.
The president claimed that the number linked to the compromised phone, a personal phone she used before assuming office in October of last year, had been posted on social media during her campaign.
In February of last year, she claimed to have received “hate messages” following the release of her contact details.
Sheinbaum stated that several people were aware of the “very old” hacked email.
An investigation was launched when the computer giant Apple “immediately” informed the Mexican government about the event, she claimed.
