A militant group under the aegis “Ijaw Freedom Fighters” has attacked the Imariogha Community near the Okomu Oil Palm plantation, setting eight vehicles ablaze and killing one person in the process.
The incident was reported to have happened on Sunday night. Eyewitnesses say that the militants invaded the community from the riverside around midnight, shooting sporadically into the air, setting fire to about eight vehicles and destroying several properties.
A community leader, Mr Rex Akpokiniovo, confirmed the incident and disclosed that a staff of Okomu Oil was killed in the attack. “One of the Okomu workers, who resides in the community, was killed while the invaders left a warning note on his chest,” Akpokiniovo said.
The attackers made several demands from Okomu Oil Palm Plc’s management in the note addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Some of the demands included a directorship position in Okomu Oil Palm Company and 25 per cent of the company’s shares.
The company had recently raised concerns over incessant attacks on its facilities and personnel by militants and threatened to shut down operations
