Workers in the Federal Capital Territory, Cross River, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Kaduna, and Zamfara states may strike on Monday (today) if state officials fail to negotiate payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage.
Though the implementation panels established by the concerned states have been meeting with labour leaders in an attempt to avert the strike action, the various state chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress have stated their willingness to go on strike beginning today.
The FCT Council of the NLC had already urged workers in the six Area Councils to go on indefinite strike on December 1 until additional instructions were delivered.
On Saturday, the Chairman of the NLC’s FCT Council, Stephen Knabayi, signed a letter stating this.
This came after the NLC leadership directed workers in 14 states and the FCT to go on strike starting Sunday over the failure to implement the new minimum wage.
Knabayi criticised the area council chairmen for failing to respond to the call for the implementation of the minimum wage despite receiving the National Executive Council of the NLC’s communique dated November 14, 2024.
The NLC’s Nasarawa State chapter declared on Sunday that if the minimum wage is not paid, it will go on strike.
Ismaila Okoh, the state NLC Chairman, revealed that all labour members had received a strike notification.
He did, however, reveal that the Nasarawa State government had struck an arrangement with the union to pay the workers N70,500, but that no document had been signed to ensure its implementation.
