Rwandan beauty queen, Divine Muheto, has been arrested for drink-driving and driving without a licence.
Authorities say the beauty queen had destroyed “infrastructure” and left the scene. They did not say if anyone was hurt in the accident.
According to the police, this is not the first time Muheto, 21, has been arrested for drink-driving. Her arrest was announced by the police on Tuesday after speculation that she had been detained over a collision.
Divine Muheto has not publicly reacted to the arrest.
A spokesperson for the prosecution told local media that a court in Kigali, the nation’s capital, will begin hearing Nuheto’s case on Thursday.
Ms Muheto became well-known in Rwanda after winning the national beauty pageant in 2022. Since then, the event has not taken place, as the government suspended it following allegations of sexual misconduct against the organisers.
Driving under the influence attracts a penalty of 150,000 Rwandan francs ($110; £85) and a five-day detention by the police.
In recent years, thousands have been apprehended for this offence as law enforcement has intensified. In 2022, a parliament member expressed remorse and stepped down due to a drink-driving incident.
The government states that the recent stringent application of traffic regulations has decreased the incidence of fatal traffic accidents in Rwanda.
