Reports indicate that mobs on Thursday set mosques ablaze in several locations across northern and southern Ethiopia by suspected extremist militias (Fano) in Gondar city, Ethiopia.

Recall, on Tuesday in Gondar, Amhara region, violence erupted when at least 20 Muslims were killed and hundreds more injured while attending a burial of a local religious figure.

It was gathered that four mosques were set ablaze by the Amhara militia during the incident. According to the administration, 280 people have been arrested in connection with the Gondar violence.

It has warned that anyone involved in extending tensions to neighbouring cities will face severe punishment. The Addis Ababa Islamic Affairs’ High Council said in a statement that the attack was a ‘planned massacre’

Muslims in Addis Ababa’s capital, Meskel Square, have planned a huge gathering late Friday to break their fast in protest of the killings. Muslims account up about 34% of Ethiopia’s population of around 115 million people.
