Exiled Mozambique opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has announced his return to the country on January 9th, after over two months of deadly protests over disputed presidential election results.
Mondlane, who fled Mozambique on October 21 citing threats to his life, has been leading protests from abroad against the October 9th election, which declared Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo the winner. Chapo is set to be inaugurated on January 15th.
Recent demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of police stations, banks, and factories being looted and set ablaze. Mondlane’s return is expected to heighten tensions as protests continue to grip the nation.
