Reports say that over 90 individuals have been reported missing following the devastating floods in Kenya, which resulted in at least 46 fatalities on Monday, April 29, 2024. The casualties occurred due to a mudslide and flash floods in Maai Mahiu town in central Kenya.
The floods have claimed the lives of at least 169 Kenyans over the past two weeks. Four counties, namely Nairobi, Tana River, West Pokot, and Homa Bay, have been severely affected, with Garissa and Homa Bay each reporting four deaths, and approximately 102 individuals sustaining injuries across the country.
The ongoing crisis has led to the displacement of 30,099 households, affecting approximately 150,495 people. Notably, in Sindo, Homa Bay County, 161 households have been left homeless. Overall, the government estimates that 190,942 people have been impacted by the floods.
“We are actively carrying out search, rescue and recovery operations especially in Nakuru due to the recent mudslides and have rescued 23 people in Garissa,” the ministry said.
Kenya, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, is to experience more rainfall in the coming weeks.
Kenya isn’t the only country affected by the floods. Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi are having their fair share of the disaster.
