Moroccan authorities have opened an investigation to determine the causes of a road mishap involving an intercity bus that claimed the lives of two people while twelve others were injured.
The accident occurred early in the morning on Saturday, September 4, on the national road linking Errachidia with Ouarzazate involved an intercity bus carrying passengers. It overturned at the entrance of Skoura, 44.5 kilometers from Ouarzazate in southeastern Morocco.
Royal Gendarmerie and civil protection were mobilised to the scene of the accident to recover bodies and take survivors to the nearest hospital in the area.
Morocco has experienced an increase in traffic accidents compared to 2020, when accident numbers and number of fatalities dropped significantly due to COVID-19 preventive measures, as movement was limited due to the pandemic.
According to the National Agency for Road Safety (NARSA) for the first five months of 2021 show 1,193 dead, up 36.7% from the same period a year earlier. Despite this increase, the number of fatalities is down 8.1% compared to the same period in 2019.
