Authorities in Morocco have decided to survey all abandoned wells across the country following the death of a 5-year old boy Rayan who died while trapped in the well for five days

Recall, on February 5, 2022, News Central reported that Rayan fell into a narrow 32metre well in the village of Ighran in the country’s Chefchaouen province last Tuesday.

The incident hit global headlines and sparked media attention as hundreds of people gathered at the well with a view to rescuing him alive.

A Water Ministry Official in Morocco Abdelaziz Zerouali said the survey was designed to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.

Zerouali warned that those who dug wells that violated Government regulations would be sanctioned, adding that more than 1,000 Moroccans a year were already being punished for illegal drilling.
