Morocco’s naval forces have conducted a rescue operation, saving 141 African migrants aboard a vessel encountering difficulties while en route from Mauritania to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago.
The rescue took place on Sunday, approximately 274 kilometres (170 miles) southwest of Dakhla city in the Western Sahara desert.
According to reports from the Moroccan navy, the migrants departed from the Mauritanian coast on February 10.
Last year, the Canary Islands witnessed an influx of nearly 32,000 migrants, marking the highest number recorded since 2006.
In January, Spanish authorities noted a continuous surge in migrant arrivals to the islands, with the majority of boats originating from Mauritania.
