According to the official Moroccan News Agency, Morocco has successfully recovered fossils dating back approximately 400 million years.
The agency revealed that on Monday, 117 rare fossils, dating back around 400 million years, were repatriated to Morocco. These artefacts had been seized by Chilean customs authorities between 2017 and 2022.
Nelida Pozo Kudo, Director of the Chilean National Heritage Service, remarked during the ceremony held in Santiago to return the fossils, emphasising the significance of cooperation between Morocco and Chile in safeguarding valuable scientific artefacts.
Expressing gratitude to the Chilean authorities, Kenza El Ghali, the Moroccan Ambassador to Santiago, acknowledged their collaborative efforts over the past five years in retrieving these fossils, which are integral to Morocco’s heritage.
The Moroccan news agency did not specify the circumstances surrounding the departure of these artefacts from the kingdom, leaving questions about their journey unanswered.
