Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka said water desalination remains a priority for managing the nation’s water deficit.
Baraka stated this in response to questions on Tuesday at the House of Advisors.
He noted that 50% of the drinking water supply will be provided by desalination by 2030, adding that the government has put in the process of constructing several desalination plants to reach a production level of 1.4 billion m3 in record time.
The desalination of 560 million m3 will be done by the OCP. While 500 million m3 of water will be used for agriculture, what is left of the volume will be used to supply potable water to citizens.
The government plans to install desalination plants in coastal towns using a public and private partnership approach. This will enable inland towns and rural areas with wells for irrigation.
The Minister also explained the government’s plan to spread drinking water supply channels to relieve pressure on dams, whose water will be routed to inland regions, rural communities, and the agricultural sector.
