The mother of a missing six-year-old girl, facing charges of trafficking and kidnapping, has opted to withdraw her plea for bail, eliciting shockwaves across South Africa.

Tensions escalated outside the Vredenburg court as police resorted to tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters amidst the latest revelations in the case of Joshlin Rachelin Smith’s disappearance.

Racquel Smith, a 33-year-old mother, was apprehended last week alongside three others, including her boyfriend, amid suspicions of involvement in the trafficking of the missing girl.

However, speculations surrounding the identity of the buyer, rumored to be a traditional healer, were dispelled when one of the arrested individuals was released without charge.

The news brought a sense of relief to some protesters who had perceived her as a scapegoat in this distressing saga.

As the legal proceedings unfolded, the remaining three suspects chose to forgo their requests for bail, signaling a potential inclination toward negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors.

Joshlin has been missing for nearly a month since her disappearance in Saldanha Bay, a fishing town north of Cape Town. Despite extensive search efforts and widespread public outcry, her whereabouts remain unknown.

Authorities have uncovered clothing believed to belong to the missing girl, which has been subjected to DNA testing in hopes of unraveling the mystery.

This case sheds light on the troubling issue of child abduction in South Africa, where crime rates rank among the highest globally.

The National Prosecuting Authority has vowed to vehemently oppose any future bail applications by the three.
