Policemen are on the hunt for grave robbers who took the body parts of a deceased albino man in Moatize district, in Tete province, Mozambique –for sorcery purposes.

The robbers dug through a concrete slab that was used to reinforce the grave. Police say the suspects are still at large after the incident in the country’s western region.

The deceased, who was about 50 years old, was recently buried in a village that borders Malawi.

Relatives of the 50-year-old deceased reinforced the grave with concrete before burying him in a village bordering Malawi in anticipation of possible theft.

Remane Madane, an albino rights campaigner has condemned the burglary, adding that the police had promised to apprehend the suspects.

“The cemetery is isolated. To get there it is a long distance, to go alone you have to think twice, otherwise maybe a team (was involved),” he said.

People with albinism, who lack pigment in their skin and appear pale, are regularly targeted in several African countries including Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique for witchcraft purposes.
