Mozambican troops say the troubled town of Palma, in northern Cabo Delgado where insurgents have sent tens of thousands of locals out of their homes, is now secure.
More than 30,000 Palma residents fled their homes following insurgents attacks in the coastal town which hosts a $60bn gas project, the biggest single investment on the continent. The attack occurred on the 24th of March and many have died from the assailants’ blatantly brutal siege.
Mozambicans scampered to safety seeking cover in forests; some others travelled by boats across the coasts to safer areas.
The government of the Portuguese-speaking country is yet to reveal the extent of the devastation but say the assailants who still attacked on Friday have been driven out of the town and many of them have been killed by the army.
Total, which owns the multi-billion dollar gas company in the province has not revealed the extent of the damage done to its project. The French Oil giant had previously said the safety of those working on the project remains of utmost priority.
