Mpox: How to Protect Yourself from the Disease

Mpox

In the past week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Mpox a global health emergency.
In response, different countries have activated an emergency response plan to combat the spread of the disease.

Here’s how you can protect yourself from contracting the disease.

  1. Observe rashes that resemble chickenpox:
The disease can manifest in various ways during different stages. The rash might start as small and then grow, making it challenging to differentiate between Mpox and a regular rash.
The most advisable approach is to refrain from self-diagnosing any rash you or a member of your household experiences. If a skin rash is observed, promptly seek medical attention.
  2. Avoid skin-to-skin contact with others:
WHO reports that the viral disease spreads easily via skin-to-skin contact.
Avoid attending gatherings where people wear little or no clothing such as clubs or swimming pools. Avoid close contact as the infectious disease can easily be contracted.
  3. Don’t touch people with rashes that resemble chickenpox:
Avoid touching someone’s rash if you suspect Mpox. One of the physical features of Mpox is rashes on the body, including private areas.
  4. Avoid sharing towels, bed sheets, or clothing:
Do not share towels or clothing with anyone you think has Mpox or shows signs of the disease.
Use separate cups and utensils. Remember to report the situation to the nearest hospital or health authority.

Remember to always wash your hands thoroughly, especially if you touch anything used by someone with a rash.
