The National Assembly has given its full backing to Professor Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President of Kenya.
All 236 Members of Parliament present cast their votes in favour of his appointment, with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announcing the unanimous decision.
“The vote is overwhelmingly Yes,” declared Mr Wetang’ula.
President William Ruto officially announced his decision to appoint Prof Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President after Rigathi Gachagua was impeached on Thursday, October 17.
Prof Kindiki, who has served as the Interior Minister since September 2022, is the only Cabinet Secretary to maintain his position following recent government restructuring.
An Infotrak poll conducted recently indicated that Prof Kindiki was the preferred candidate for Gachagua’s replacement, garnering 20% support.
Prof Kindiki is known for his calm demeanour and is respected across various political factions. His close ties with President Ruto, especially his role as Ruto’s lawyer during his legal challenges at the International Criminal Court, have also contributed to his positive image.
