Nollywood comic actor, Mr. Ibu, has recently undergone a second leg amputation surgery, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) revealed on Saturday.
The 62-year-old veteran actor, whose real name is John Okafor, had undergone a similar procedure on his first leg just weeks ago.
According to AGN, Mr. Ibu, now tragically bereft of both legs, is facing additional challenges as he can barely speak, and his overall condition appears to be deteriorating.
Dr. Emeka Rollas, the AGN National President, expressed deep concern about Mr. Ibu’s health status, as well as that of his colleague and contemporary, Amaechi Muonagor, who has been hospitalised for the past two months due to paralysis.
Dr. Rollas expressed worry over the situation of both actors. He stated:
“We are resigning to fate concerning the two actors. As I speak with you, Mr. Ibu hardly talks again, and he has undergone another leg amputation.”
He continued:
“You will shed tears if you see Amaechi Muonagor now; his legs are completely paralysed. I’m calling on all fans and well-wishers of the actor to join hands with other philanthropic Nigerians to support him in this dire time.”
The distressing condition of these two talented actors, known for their roles in many hit movies, has sparked questions about the financial well-being of actors in Nollywood.
Criticisms have been directed at the AGN for seemingly neglecting industry veterans who often turn to the public for financial assistance. The association has repeatedly dismissed all speculations in this regard.
Dr. Rollas urged young actors in the industry to prioritise their health by considering long-term plans, such as enrolling in the association’s Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) and Insurance programmes.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria serves as the umbrella organisation that regulates actors in the Nigerian movie industry, widely recognised as Nollywood.
