German football legend Thomas Muller has announced his retirement from international football after a stellar 14-year career with the national team. The 34-year-old attacker, who currently plays for Bayern Munich, made the announcement following the conclusion of Euro 2024.
He amassed an impressive 131 caps, scoring 45 goals, and played a pivotal role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory. Müller’s work ethic, creativity, and knack for finding the net made him a fan favourite and a key figure in German football for over a decade.
“It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together,” Muller said in a post on social media.
“When I had the privilege of making my first international appearance, I would never have dreamed of all this. I would like to say thank you to all the fans and my German teammates for their support over the years. Take the enthusiasm and joy of this year’s Euros with you.” He added.
He debuted for the national team in a friendly against Argentina in 2010 and scored five goals during that year’s World Cup, winning the Golden Boot.
The Bayern Munich forward has made the third-highest appearances for Germany’s men’s team, behind only Miroslav Klose (137) and Lothar Matthäus (150).
