Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni directed jibes at Liberian President, George Opong Weah and Liberians.
Museveni in a statement said Liberians voted a footballer as President but now regret taking that decision.
Recall that Weah, Africa’s only FIFA World Player of the year winner was voted as President in 2018 in an election that was expected to change the fortunes of the West African country.
Liberians have not had it as smooth since the former Senator and former football star became President, with sections of the populace describing him as a dictator.
Museveni, who’s up against Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) on January 14th said people should not vote out excitement, targeting Kyagulanyi’s musician status.
“Some countries have voted for change out of excitement. In Liberia, citizens voted for a Footballer out of excitement but it did not take them even a year to regret. They say their leader has turned into a dictator,” he said.
Bobi Wine has used his music to attract Ugandan youths and is expected to mount a serious challenge despite the sitting government’s efforts to frustrate his attempts.
Arrests and battery have been meted out on some of Wine’s supporters and attempts have been made on his life but the music star and former MP has stayed resolute.
Museveni, 76, has been President since 1986 and has maintained that he’s the man for the future of the country.
In 2017, the Ugandan President, once described as a revolutionary in the continent, sponsored the ejection of the Presidential age limit from the country’s constitution. The age limit would have presented Museveni from partaking in the election.
