NAFDAC DG Receives Africa’s Medical Products Regulation Award

Professor Adeyeye Mojisola, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has been honoured with Africa’s Medical Products Regulation Award 2023. The award was presented by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) during the 6th Biennial Scientific Conference on Medical Products Regulation in Africa, held in Cairo, Egypt, from December 5 to 7.

The award recognises Professor Adeyeye’s transformative leadership and visionary approach at NAFDAC. It specifically acknowledges her pioneering initiatives, including the agency’s attainment of Medicine Quality Control Laboratory (ML3) status within four years. AUDA-NEPAD and WHO applauded Professor Adeyeye for leveraging digital tools such as the Med Safety App for Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting and GS1-driven traceability for tracking over 1.5 million secondary packages of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic, ensuring supply chain visibility.

The international organisations’ commendation highlights NAFDAC’s groundbreaking efforts in combating substandard and counterfeit medical products, showcasing the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety and authenticity of medicinal products in Africa. The award was received on behalf of Professor Adeyeye by Asmau Abubakar, Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer at NAFDAC.
