The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled an illegal factory in the Oke Arin market on Lagos Island, where counterfeit alcoholic beverages were being produced.
In a statement issued via X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the agency revealed that it acted on a complaint, conducting a raid that led to the arrest of three men and the confiscation of counterfeit drinks, empty bottles, and packaging materials.
NAFDAC stated that the seized items, which included fake versions of well-known alcoholic brands, were valued at over ₦180 million.
Arrest and Confession
Mr Tochukwu Henry, the key suspect, acknowledged to refilling bottles marked Rémy Martin with ST-Rémy contents. He also admitted to employing two others to help with the criminal enterprise.
The statement read:
“NAFDAC has raided a makeshift factory in the Oke Arin market on Lagos Island following a complaint regarding the unlawful production of alcoholic beverages.
“Three men were apprehended, and various counterfeit alcoholic drinks, empty bottles, and packaging materials were seized. The products, valued at over ₦180 million, included fake versions of popular brands.
“The main suspect, Mr Tochukwu Henry, confessed to refilling bottles labelled as Rémy Martin with ST-Rémy contents and employing two others to aid the operation.
“All suspects are currently in custody for further investigation. NAFDAC urges the public to remain vigilant, especially during the festive season, and report any suspicious activities or products to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
