Nigerian controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, has filed an appeal challenging the six-month sentence handed down by the Federal High Court in Lagos. He faced charges related to naira abuse, brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine, Bobrisky’s case serves as a warning against currency abuse in Nigeria. His legal representative, Bimbo Kusanu, filed the appeal, seeking to overturn the maximum sentence and replace it with a N50,000 fine per count.
Kusanu argued that Okuneye has no prior criminal record, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) provides for lesser penalties. He criticised the trial court’s failure to exercise discretion appropriately, citing Bobrisky’s guilty plea and cooperation with authorities.
Describing the sentence as punitive and contrary to legal provisions, Kusanu labelled it a miscarriage of justice against his client.
