In the aftermath of the passing of the former President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, the newly-inaugurated President Nangolo Mbumba has declared a period of national mourning to honour the late leader, who succumbed to cancer on Sunday.
President Geingob, aged 82, passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital city, Windhoek.
The designated national mourning period commenced on Monday and is slated to extend until the day of President Geingob’s funeral, which is yet to be determined, as announced in a public broadcast by ICT Minister Peya Mushelenga.
Minister Mushelenga revealed, “The president has constituted a committee chaired by the prime minister, which is making arrangements for the funeral. This committee, when arrangements are made and are finalised, it will make announcements.”
Throughout this mourning period, all national flags in Namibia and its foreign diplomatic missions will be flown at half-mast in tribute to the late president.
Contrary to reports, the government has clarified that schools will remain open during this time of national mourning.
