Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has assured workers that his administration will pay N70,500 as the December salary, in line with the approved minimum wage.
This promise comes despite an ongoing strike by state workers, which has led to the closure of all government offices across the state.
The governor announced the inauguration of the remodelled office of Deputy Governor Dr Emmanuel Akabe in Lafia.
Governor Sule reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the living standards of the state’s residents, including civil servants. He emphasised that the welfare of workers in both state and local government employment has been a top priority for his government.
He urged striking workers to reconsider their actions and return to their duties, assuring them that the N70,500 minimum wage would take effect this month. Additionally, he promised that his administration would continue to pay salaries on time.
This comes after civil servants, under the banner of organised labour unions, began an indefinite strike over the government’s alleged failure to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage, which was signed into law by the federal government. Workers, led by union leaders, have shut down ministries, departments, and agencies across the state to press their demands.
Comrade Ismaila Okoh, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa, accused the government of failing to make a formal commitment to the wage increase despite multiple rounds of negotiations.
“All offices will remain shut until the state government reconsiders its stance and begins payment of the 70,000 Naira minimum wage,” Okoh had declared.
