NCC Gives Subscribers Reprieve, Reactivates Barred Lines

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed the reactivation of blocked lines following a significant number of subscribers having their lines barred due to not linking them with a National Identification Number (NIN) over the weekend.

Despite the initial disconnection for not linking NINs with their SIMs, the regulator has now ordered all disconnected lines to be reactivated by the telecom operators.

“Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM,” the commission said.

The NCC had extended the deadline for linking SIMs and NINs from April 15, 2024, to July 31, 2024, to give subscribers more time. Despite these extensions, there are still many phone lines that have not been linked with verified NINs.

Whether this grace period will be extended beyond the initial July 31, 2024 deadline remains unclear.
