Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, for importing a large quantity of synthetic cannabis known as “Canadian Loud.”
The arrest took place on Thursday, October 3, during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on a KLM flight from Canada at Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport. NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed the arrest, revealing that Munju was caught with 74 parcels of the illicit substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of her three bags.
According to Babafemi, Munju, who was visiting Nigeria for the first time, admitted in her statement that she had been recruited to traffic the drugs through an online platform. She was promised 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery of the consignment in Lagos. Munju claimed she accepted the offer to help pay for her ongoing master’s degree in Canada.
In separate operations, NDLEA officers at the Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers State, intercepted a massive haul of 13,298,000 opioid pills, including Tramadol, Tramaking Quick Action Tramadol, Tamol-X, Royal Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, along with 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of over ₦9 billion.
These opioids were recovered from three containers that arrived from India. The NDLEA conducted a thorough joint inspection of the cargoes, in collaboration with Nigerian Customs and other port officials, on Wednesday, October 2, and Thursday, October 3, 2024.
