The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized large amounts of drugs and arrested many people in recent operations across Nigeria.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Agency’s Director for Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi on Sunday in Abuja.
The statement said the Agency intercepted 6,125 cartons of codeine syrup worth over N7.3 billion at the Port Harcourt Ports complex in Rivers State. This seizure, made from six containers, was the result of detailed intelligence and cooperation with other security agencies, including Customs.
At Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, two passengers traveling to Doha were arrested after testing positive for ingesting illicit substances.
The suspects, Aikhomoun Daniel (alias Oladapo Olanrewaju) and Ayigoro Waheed Omobolaji, excreted a total of 150 wraps of cocaine. Daniel used a stolen identity to obtain a Schengen visa for travel to Europe.
Additionally, NDLEA recovered 40.32kg of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, from a Toyota Tacoma truck on Lekki-Ikoyi road after the driver abandoned the vehicle.
In Abuja, NDLEA disrupted a drug party in Sun City estate, arresting 60 individuals, including 25 males and 35 females. The party, organised by Stanley Ikechukwu, led to the seizure of various drugs like ecstasy and cannabis.
The NDLEA Chief, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, ordered the release of 20 suspects who tested negative for drugs and the conditional release of 33 others who tested positive.
In Edo State, NDLEA raided and destroyed 18,632kg of cannabis on a large farm, arresting four individuals involved in the operation.
The NDLEA continues its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) with educational and advocacy efforts in schools, churches, and communities across the country. These activities aim to raise awareness and prevent drug abuse.
Brig. Gen. Marwa praised the efforts of NDLEA officers in various regions and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to staying ahead of drug cartels through continuous vigilance and collaboration with other stakeholders.
He encouraged the officers to persist in their balanced approach to drug control, ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian communities.
