Neighbours At War; Somalia Expels Kenyan Envoy

A war of neighbours may be looming again in Africa, after Somalia expelled the Kenyan ambassador over interference in elections in Jubbaland.

Somalia has also recalled its ambassador from Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

Jubbaland is one of Somalia’s five semi-autonomous states. Others are Puntland, South-West Somalia, Hirshabelle and Galmudug.

“As a result of the Kenyan government’s political interferences in the internal affairs of Somalia, the regional President of Jubbaland has reneged on the election agreement that was reached on the 17th September 2020 in Mogadishu,” the Somali Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Facebook.

It is not the first of disagreements between Somalia and Kenya, with a diplomatic row in 2019 leading Nairobi to recall its ambassador from Mogadishu.

Currently, there are Kenyan military officers in Somalia as part of a UN joint peacekeeping force against Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab terrorist organisations.
