The Lagos State House of Assembly has revealed the election of new principal officers following the ousting of Mudashiru Obasa from his role as speaker.
Obasa, who serves the Agege I constituency, was dismissed from his position on January 13 with unanimous support after accusations of misconduct. The assembly also discontinued all principal roles and standing committees.
Afterwards, Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, was chosen to take the helm of the state assembly, and Fatai Adebola was appointed deputy speaker.
During the Friday plenary session, Meranda announced Temitope Adedeji’s appointment as majority leader, David Setonji as chief whip, and Richard Kasumu to continue as deputy majority leader.
“The appointed members are: Hon. Temitope Adedeji (Ifako Ijaiye 1) as Majority Leader, Hon. David Setonji (Badagry 2) as Chief Whip, Hon. Richard Kasumu (Ikeja 2) as Deputy Majority Leader, and Hon. Sanni Babatunde (Kosofe 1) as Deputy Chief Whip,” stated the speaker.
Following her election as speaker, Meranda convened a meeting with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), representing the highest decision-making group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.
She noted that the meeting aimed to provide an update regarding recent events in the assembly and to request the council’s endorsement for the new appointments.
