Josephine Etim Edet, a student at Arthur Jarvis University, who was kidnapped on Tuesday by armed men in Akpabuyo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria’s Southsouth, has regained her freedom

The school, which is the first private university in the state and is located 18 kilometres from Calabar, had almost finished its session when the incident occurred.

Students were returning from classes when gun shots rang, before they managed to scamper away, some sustaining multiple injuries.

A skilled group of police officers carried out an operation under the direction of Aminu Alhassan, the Cross River State Police Commissioner.

The tactical unit was involved in a covert operation that led them to the gangsters’ stronghold in Akpabuyo, where the victim was rescued on Thursday night about 11:00 p.m.

According to information, some of the suspects were neutralized, while one was taken into custody. Treatment is being given to the victim.

The state’s police public relations officer, SP Irene Ugbo, verified the rescue and called the achievement an admirable victory.

Irene said: “It is true, a crack team of officers combed the creeks of Akpabuyo and rescued the victim at about 11pm Thursday.

“It was based on the order of the Commissioner of Police, CP Aminu Alhassan, and we thank God that the student was rescued alive

“She is recovering as she is also receiving treatment at the moment.

“This is a serious note of warning that we will not tolerate any form of criminality in any part of the state.

“No matter where they hide, we shall always smoke them out, no matter how long it takes.

“Every kidnapper or criminal in the state must understand that we are bringing the fight to them. We are not going to allow any person or group to carry out any nefarious activity in any part of Cross River state,” she warned.
