The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has begun distributing 1,000 conversion kits across various states to help mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
During a press conference in Abuja to announce the launch, Programme Director Michael Oluwagbemi explained that the initiative aims to reduce transportation costs and will create over 100,000 direct jobs within the next three years by converting approximately three million vehicles to run on CNG.
Oluwagbemi added that commercial transport operators would be converted free of charge to help lower transportation costs in light of the subsidy removal.
Moses Onate, the Warehouse Manager of the PiCN facility, showcased some of the conversion kits at their warehouse in Ibafo, Ogun State, and noted that the distribution is being carried out on a “First Come, First Serve” basis. He mentioned that 450 kits have already been distributed, with another 550 awaiting dispatch.
Onate urged Nigerians to embrace the initiative, emphasising its potential to greatly reduce fuel costs for vehicles.
The conversion kits will allow vehicles to run on compressed natural gas, a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol.
