Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has announced a new partnership with China to advance renewable energy projects and green industrialisation in Nigeria.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Friday at the COP29 High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change.
Although the detailed contents of the MOU remain confidential, the agreement is expected to focus on promoting green technologies, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing investment in renewable energy infrastructure across Nigeria.
Speaking about the agreement, Lawal said;
“The MOU just signed now is trying to establish a relationship between Nigeria and the people of Kusana in the area of clean energy, particularly green industrialisation. We are focusing on specific areas within Nigeria, like the Lake Peninsula and the Northern Belt. This is just the beginning of our partnership.”
Lawal also highlighted the origins of this collaboration, explaining that discussions began at last year’s COP28.
“We had a bilateral meeting with China, where we raised concerns about the impact of climate change in certain areas of Nigeria. This agreement represents significant progress. It will focus on clean energy, including Nigeria’s solar belt,” he stated.
China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment, Zhao Yingming, also participated in the signing, marking a key milestone in climate cooperation between the two countries.
This partnership aligns with the broader goals of COP29 to promote equitable climate solutions and tackle global environmental challenges.
As climate impacts intensify worldwide, Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy and green technologies signals a step forward in addressing these pressing issues.
