Nigeria has commenced its COVID-19 vaccines rollout on Friday with frontline health workers to get vaccinated before other groups.
The first Nigerian to get vaccinated was Dr. Cyprian Ngong, a frontline health worker. He was given an electronic card as proof his vaccination.
The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency in charge of the vaccine rollout says the card will be internationally recognised.
Nigeria on Tuesday received 3.92m doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from the Serum Institute of India at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
On the same day, the Minister for State for Health in the country, Dr. Olorunnimbe Mamora told News Central that the vaccines will be administered on health workers and other workers on the front line before going to the strategic leadership in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo are scheduled to lead the strategic leadership to be vaccinated on Saturday at the State House.
Nigeria is one of several African countries who have so far received the COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX facility of the World Health Organisation, GAVI and other groups.
Ghana had on Monday rolled out vaccination. South Africa, Egypt and some other African countries also known to have rolled vaccines out already.
