A court in Nigeria has found 125 individuals linked to Boko Haram guilty of various terrorism-related charges, according to the Attorney General’s office. These charges include terrorism, financing of terrorism, providing material support, and crimes related to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The mass trial, held over two days, was conducted by five Federal High Court judges at a military detention facility in Niger State.
Since its inception in 2009, the Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and the displacement of millions. This crisis has led to a humanitarian emergency in the country’s north-eastern region, with the government struggling to end the conflict.
The court found 85 individuals guilty of terrorism financing, while 22 were convicted for ICC-related crimes. The remaining defendants were convicted of terrorism offences and received various jail sentences.
The most recent mass trials of Boko Haram suspects occurred between 2017 and 2018, resulting in 163 convictions and the release of 887 individuals.
