Faced with widespread economic challenges and the prevalent issue of hunger, the Nigerian Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has announced a temporary suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items.
This move aims to tackle the hunger crisis by making basic necessities affordable for Nigerians.
Comptroller-General of the NCS, Bashir Adeniyi, who disclosed this in a public address on Monday, reiterated the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on its citizen.
Adeniyi acknowledged the impact of global inflation on Nigerian households, and the need for government action to alleviate the financial strain. By removing import duties and taxes on key food items, the government aims to reduce costs and combat hunger.
“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation,” he said.
He further stated that the NCS is working to streamline export processes, making it easier for Nigerian goods to reach international markets.
These changes include advanced ruling systems, authorised economic operators, and a time-release study to streamline trade and create new economic opportunities.
Adeniyi also mentioned that the NCS is enhancing its efforts to prevent the smuggling of arms and dangerous weapons through Nigeria’s borders.
He called for unity and cooperation among Nigerians to address current challenges and strengthen the borders of the country.
