The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of nine trucks loaded with smuggled rice in Ogun State.
Kola Oladeji, the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, disclosed this during a press briefing held in Lagos on Monday.
Oladeji explained that the operation was carried out by customs officers under FOU Zone A, who successfully intercepted the smugglers attempting to transport the rice into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin.
He added that upon spotting the operatives, the smugglers abandoned their vehicles and fled.
To secure the confiscated goods, the command deployed six additional buses and 11 patrol vehicles to transport the rice to the customs warehouse.
“And, when our officers realized this, in compliance with our strategy of not shooting at any smugglers, they hired trucks and used some of our patrol vehicles to convey the items here.
“A breakdown of the vehicles used for conveying the seized bags of rice from the locations were nine trucks, six buses, and 11 patrol vehicles owned by the Nigeria Customs,” Oladeji said.
