The Nigerian government denied on Saturday that it was involved in the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in Gaya, Dosso Region, Niger Republic, as reported by Nigerien authorities.
Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, issued a statement in which the Nigerian government refuted claims that its security personnel were involved in the incident or that it had any connection to the terrorist organisation Lakurawa.
Although it sent its sympathies to Niger for the incident, it also underlined its steadfast dedication to fighting terrorism and separating from any such organisations.
“The Nigerian government vehemently denies claims made by Nigerien authorities that the Lakurawa terrorist group, assisted by foreign security forces, including Nigerian security forces, was in charge of the attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in Gaya, Dosso Region, Niger Republic, on December 13, 2024.”
The Nigerian government expresses its sympathies to the Niger government for the tragic attack on the oil pipeline, but it also notes that Nigerian authorities did not support or aid the attackers.
Part of the statement stated, “The Nigerian government is steadfastly dedicated to combating terrorism and will not tolerate or assist the actions of such organisations.”
It described these accusations as baseless and called for their outright dismissal.
Highlighting the longstanding cordial relations between Nigeria and France, the government reiterated that both nations adhere to principles of mutual respect, dignity, and non-interference in internal affairs.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peaceful and cooperative relations with the Republic of Niger, emphasising that such partnerships benefit the citizens of both nations.
Additionally, the Nigerian government denied reports that French troops were stationed in northern Nigeria to destabilise Niger.
It demanded their complete dismissal and characterised these charges as unfounded.
The administration emphasised the long-standing goodwill between Nigeria and France and reaffirmed that both countries uphold the values of respect for one another, decency, and non-interference in domestic matters.
Nigeria reiterated its dedication to preserving amicable and constructive ties with the Republic of Niger, stressing that these alliances are advantageous to both countries’ citizens.
“There are no French military troops in the northern part of the country preparing to destabilise the government of Niger,” the Nigerian government also said, expressing grave alarm.
“These accusations should be completely disregarded because they are baseless. Nigeria and France have long maintained a friendly relationship based on respect for one another, decency, and a commitment to not meddling in one another’s domestic affairs.
“Nigeria will continue to explore all peaceful means to maintain its cordial relationship with the Republic of Niger for the benefit of both countries’ people,” the statement added.
