The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has plunged into complete darkness because the Eko Distribution Company (EKEDC) disconnected it from the national power grid.
The disconnection occurred on Tuesday, August 27, after a financial disagreement between the university and the power company over an outstanding electricity bill of ₦472 million.
In a statement by the university management on Wednesday, the institution expressed concern and appealed to the campus community for patience during this difficult period.
The management stated that despite UNILAG’s recent payment of ₦180 million to EKEDC, the university was disconnected without prior notice. The university has been struggling with the financial burden resulting from EKEDC’s decision to move it from “Band B” to “Band A” on its tariff plan.
This shift almost doubled the university’s monthly electricity bill, increasing it from around ₦150 million to nearly ₦300 million as of June. The sudden surge has significantly impacted the university’s ability to fulfil its financial responsibilities.
