Nigeria: Enugu Governor Renames Road After Ejeagha

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially renamed the reconstructed Obinagu Road after the legendary folktale musician, ‘Gentleman’ Mike Ejeagha, acknowledging his significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the state.

At the commissioning of four newly completed roads in the Abakpa Nike area, including the newly named Mike Ejeagha Crescent, Governor Mbah highlighted the significance of honoring Ejeagha during his lifetime. He called the event a milestone in fulfilling his administration’s social contract with the people and reaffirmed his commitment to launching various people-focused projects.

During a personal visit to Mike Ejeagha’s residence, Governor Mbah conveyed the state government’s deep gratitude for the musician’s lasting contributions.

“In recognition of Mike Ejeagha’s immense impact on Enugu State’s cultural heritage, we have renamed Obinagu Road—reconstructed earlier this year and leading to his home—Mike Ejeagha Road,” Mbah announced.

“Enugu is a state rich in history, talent, and culture. It is our responsibility to celebrate those who have shaped our identity. Today, our government stands firmly behind Mike Ejeagha, taking responsibility for his well-being as part of our effort to preserve the legacies of our indigenous icons.”

He also assured the people of Abakpa and the entire state that this was just the beginning. “We have recently awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads and 20 rural roads, with Abakpa included.”

“Very soon, we will begin the dualisation of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, extending to Opi-Nsukka. The contract has been awarded, and work will commence shortly.”

“Our commitment to transforming Enugu State is unwavering, with many more roads and projects underway to enhance the lives of our people.”

Mike Ejeagha’s 1983 hit “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” recently gained renewed popularity through a viral dance challenge initiated by comedian Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter. This resurgence has introduced the folk musician’s work to a new generation, further cementing his legacy.
