Nigeria’s Enugu State Government has unveiled plans to build a 250-bed, state-of-the-art health facility named the Enugu International Hospital. This initiative aligns with the Governor’s vision to curtail medical tourism and establish Enugu State as a leading hub for business, investment, tourism, and quality living.
Prof. Emmanuel Obi, the State Commissioner for Health, announced the project following a State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting chaired by Governor Peter Mbah. The new hospital, to be located centrally on Rangers Avenue in Enugu city, will provide advanced quaternary healthcare services, which include highly specialised and less commonly available medical treatments.
The Enugu International Hospital will be situated close to the international airport, enhancing accessibility. It is expected to provide comprehensive medical services, alongside serving as a centre for medical research and training.
In addition, Prof. Obi highlighted the EXCO’s decision to strengthen measures against Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox. The disease has become an international health concern, and the state plans to increase awareness and enhance surveillance to prevent any outbreaks. The Ministry of Health is collaborating with various health sector partners, including Port Health Services at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, to safeguard public health.
The government also announced the formation of a broad-based committee to expedite the implementation of the Enugu State Geological Information System Service Law 2024. Dr. Kingsley Udeh, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, explained that this digital transformation will streamline land administration processes and facilitate quicker issuance of Certificates of Occupancy. The new system aims to enhance land value and support the Governor’s goal of boosting the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
