The Nigerian government has expressed interest in partnering with Italy to advance the use of space technology for socio-economic development. This collaboration aims to address critical issues such as environmental protection and agricultural efficiency, according to Chief Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology.

Speaking during a visit from the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Stefano De Leo, in Abuja on Friday, Minister Nnaji highlighted the role of space technology in mitigating challenges like flooding and reducing conflicts between herders and farmers. He emphasized that leveraging this technology is essential for addressing the growing impact of climate change, particularly in flood-prone areas of Northern Nigeria.

He emphasized the importance of this collaboration, particularly in addressing flooding issues exacerbated by climate change.

The minister pointed out that flooding in several Northern states is one of the pressing challenges facing the country, citing assessments from the space agency that revealed the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon had overflowed.

Ambassador De Leo expressed Italy’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria in science and technology, encouraging the country to harness its leadership role in Africa to tap into its vast human and natural resources for technological advancement.
