Reports indicate that a fire outbreak occurred at a section of Onitsha market, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, destroying goods worth millions of Naira.
It is unknown what ignited the fire, which is said to have started around midnight. Two blocks of businesses in the Kano Street sector of the market, according to trader Obenta Jude, have already been destroyed by the fire.
He claimed that despite the fire crews’ best efforts, the fire kept burning despite their quick arrival at the scene.
Fire Chief Engr Martin Agbili confirmed the occurrence and added that as soon as he was informed, his guys were quickly rushed to the area.
He said: “At about 0220hrs (2.20am) of Monday 28-11-2022, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of fire outbreak at Kano Street behind Main Market, Onitsha.
“However, we deployed our fire truck and firefighters to scene of fire and they have been working there. They have gone for refilling of the fire truck twice.”
Recall, earlier in the November, the multi-million naira Ogbo Ogwu, also known as the Onitsha Drug Market was razed by fire, which killed at least three persons and destroyed a building, leaving 10 people severely injured.
