Nigeria: Kogi State Assembly Welcomes First Female Deputy Speaker, Comfort Nwochiola

Kogi State Assembly Welcomes First Female Deputy Speaker

Comfort Nwochiola from Ibaji Constituency has been appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, marking the first time a woman has held this position in the state. Her appointment follows the resignation of the former Deputy Speaker, Enema Paul, citing health reasons.

In response to his health challenges, Enema Paul disclosed during the plenary session that he had been dealing with the illness since 2011 and had sought medical treatment both locally and abroad with the assistance of Governor Yahaya Bello. Despite his resignation, he expressed a commitment to pursue further treatment and recovery.

The Kogi State House of Assembly, acting promptly, moved to fill the vacancy to ensure a seamless continuation of its legislative duties. During the plenary session, the Clerk of the House, Chogodo Sule Ahmed, called for nominations to replace the outgoing Deputy Speaker.

Abu Jibrin of Ajaokuta nominated Comfort Nwochiola, with Seyi Bello of Kabba/Bunu seconding the nomination. The nomination was accepted by fellow legislators, leading to the immediate administration of the oath of office to Comfort Nwochiola.

Expressing her gratitude, Comfort Nwochiola thanked Governor Yahaya Bello, Speaker of the House Aliyu Yusuf, and all members for the peaceful conduct of the process and for accepting her nomination. Her appointment as the first female Deputy Speaker in Kogi State marks a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history.
