Nigeria: Lagos Government to Observe Car-Free Day Today

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and other stakeholders, will host its annual Car-Free Day on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

This initiative encourages residents of Lagos to leave their cars at home for the day and opt for Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) alternatives, such as walking and cycling.

In a statement from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the event aims to promote active and inclusive transport options, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance public health by encouraging physical activity.

“Embrace active and inclusive transport options like walking and cycling, known as Non-Motorised Transport (NMT),” the statement urged.

Car-Free Day is observed worldwide every September 22, with many cities closing streets to cars and promoting alternative modes of transportation. In Lagos, this year’s event comes at a pivotal time, as rising fuel prices have already led to a noticeable decrease in the number of vehicles on the road.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighted the importance of NMT in fostering environmental sustainability and improving personal health.

“In addition to reducing environmental pollution, NMT addresses the negative health impacts associated with a lack of physical activity,” Osiyemi stated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, accounting for 6% of deaths worldwide. By promoting non-motorised transport, the initiative seeks to combat this issue and encourage individuals of all ages and abilities to adopt more active lifestyles.

Along with advocating for sustainable transportation, the event will serve as a platform to raise awareness about the benefits of environmental health and highlight alternatives to private car usage, including improved public transportation systems.

Car-Free Day festivities will take place on Ahmadu Bello Way, where hundreds of participants are expected to enjoy a range of activities, including cycling, cycling training, competitions, skating, stretching exercises, music, and dance.

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation will collaborate with various ministries, departments, agencies, and LUDI to ensure the event’s success, showcasing the environmental and health advantages of active transportation.
