Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged broader consultations on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills to ensure nationwide inclusivity due to their significant implications.
Speaking during a media chat on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, Makinde clarified that he is not against the reforms but expressed the governors’ collective concerns.
Makinde noted that at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, governors unanimously resolved that the four tax reform bills transmitted to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024 should be withdrawn for wider stakeholder engagement.
The bills – Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill – have faced opposition from various quarters.
“We questioned why the bills were submitted to the National Assembly before consulting us. It’s a case of putting the cart before the horse,” Makinde said.
He emphasised the need for adjustments based on feedback, stressing that inclusive dialogue could lead to alignment on the proposals.
Makinde also addressed criticism suggesting he opposed the reforms, clarifying that he was merely communicating NEC’s position.
On Recent Tragedies and Governance
Makinde described the 18 December 2024 funfair tragedy in Ibadan, which claimed 35 children’s lives, as a profound loss, adding that it could have been prevented with better safeguards.
He linked this to an earlier Bodija explosion in January 2024, which caused five deaths, 77 injuries, and damaged 58 homes.
Discussing allegations of land grabbing linked to the Circular Road project, Makinde dismissed the claims, stating the project aims to drive structured development.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to long-term economic and social progress, including prioritising education with a proposed major overhaul in 2025.
Makinde concluded by highlighting ongoing efforts to break poverty cycles and fulfil Oyo State’s vision of prosperity.
